Snappola presents: Charles Uibel

Crank Up the Music by Charles Uibel

Charles Uibel, born 1960, focused on the Great Salt Lake for several years. He shares his images with the world through regular contributions to the FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake, and in publications, competitions, exhibits, and at His works have appeared in Chinese National Geography, Sunset Magazine, Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Visual Arts Exhibition at the Art Barn, and won “Best in Show” at the Monte L. Bean Museum.

Uibel’s methodical and prolific photography at Great Salt Lake rarely probed nature; “I can’t say it with ducks.” Instead, Uibel’s intent has been to express being; to surf the moments, to stand on the corner of Ice Cream Truck Boulevard and Nowhere.

I wanted to start Snappola with a splash; Charles Uibel sent me a photograph of actual waves on the Great Salt Lake. You might know Charles’ inspired landscape work from the Great Salt Lake, but this image is “the one” I wanted for Snappola’s collectors as soon as I saw it.

One day Charles took me out to the Great Salt Lake to shoot, along with his dog Tesse. As we drove out I-80 toward one of his favorite locations, Tesse started barking and whining at every exit. I asked Charles what was wrong. “Nothing, Tesse just thinks we are going to [insert a series of locations]. I knew Charles had spent a large amount of time wandering the shoreline, but so much that even his dog knows all the good spots? Wow.

Tesse the dog didn’t get to go to Bonneville the day Charles shot “Crank Up the Music” because the salt flats are too tough for her paws. She would have loved it, just like I think you will love owning this first ever Snappola edition.

Printed in an edition of 100, they won’t last long, so snap ‘em up.
